Precautions / Side Effects for Accutane
Accutane (Isotretinoin) can lead to birth deformations which can be serious and life threatening in the child, if the mother takes this medicine during her pregnancy. It is highly recommended that a doctor should be consulted before taking brand or generic Accutane if you are pregnant. Even one dose of this drug can cause severe defects to the fetus’s eyes, ears, skull, face, brain and heart. Isotretinoin can also cause headaches and you should stop the medication incase the headache is severe or persistent. Other side effects are muscular and joint pains, eye irritation, nose dryness and dry skin.
You should not take vitamin supplements containing vitamin A while taking the Accutane drug. Avoid strenuous exercises while on this medication. You should not donate blood either while consuming brand or generic Accutane or for at least 30 days after you stop taking it. You should immediately stop the use of Accutane drug and consult your doctor if you have unprotected sex, your period is late, if you stop using birth control methods or if you think you may be pregnant. Though it is not known if this drug passes in to the breast milk or not, you should consult your doctor before consuming Accutane if you are breast feeding your child.
Accutane Dosage
You should take Accutane with food. The recommended dosage of Accutane is 0.5 to 1.0 mg/kg/day which should be taken as 2 doses for fifteen to twenty weeks. It has been seen in some patients that the lower dosages of 0.1 mg/kg/day, 0.5 mg/kg/day and 1.0 mg/kg/day does not bring about much improvement and in such cases, an additional course may be needed the patient. If you are suffering with an acute form of the disease, your doctor may prescribe a higher dosage of Accutane such as 2.0 mg/kg/day. If you don’t take this medicine with food, its absorption will decrease significantly.
