General Information On Actos
Actos is indicated in the treatment of type 2 diabetes (also known as insulin-dependent diabetes). The generic name of this drug is Pioglitazone. It belongs to a category of drugs referred to as thiazolidinediones. Actos is available in form of oral tablets.
Like other drugs of its class, Actos reduces the quantity of glucose in the blood. It achieves this primarily by binding itself to insulin receptors in the cells. This, in turn, makes the cells more reactive to insulin. As a result, excess glucose is effectively eliminated. Pioglitazone also reduces the glucose levels in the blood by slowing the production of glucose by the liver.
Actos does not cure diabetes, a condition for which there is no cure. It only aids the effective management of diabetes.
Side effects of Actos
Common side effects Actos are: muscle pain, gradual weight gain, mild headache, sneezing, cough, stuffy nose, sore throat, tooth problems, or back pain.
In some cases, Actos may cause serious side effects such as: painful urination, chest pain, abdominal pain, symptoms of liver damage (loss of appetite, dark-colored urine, yellowing of the eyes or skin, black or tarry stools, upper abdominal pain, and nausea), increased urination, thirst, and/or hunger, or easy bruising. You must consult your doctor immediately if you experience any of these side effects.
You should not take a diabetes medication, including Actos, when experiencing a bout of hypoglycemia or low blood sugar. Common symptoms of hypoglycemia are: headache, weakness, blurred vision, trouble concentrating, irritability, hunger, or sweating. Diabetic patients should always keep a ready supply of sugar candy or glucose tablets with themselves. You should consume glucose tablets or other food sources rich in sugar, such as orange juice or milk, whenever you experience hypoglycemia.
You should not buy Actos if you have a known hypersensitivity to Pioglitazone. First time users should immediately report any occurrence of a hypersensitive reaction. Common symptoms of hypersensitivity are: facial flushing, skin rashes, irritation, or difficulty swallowing or breathing.
Actos is a Pregnancy Category C drug, which means its safety for pregnant women is not known. If you are pregnant, consult your doctor before using Actos.
The active ingredient in this drug, Pioglitazone, may enter breast milk and harm a nursing child. Therefore, breastfeeding women should use Actos only when asked to do so by their doctor.
