Basic Information On Adenoscan
Adenoscan is an adenosine powder soluble in water and injected intravenously by doctors (in a hospital) to understand the working of the patient’s heart. Having a pH of 4.5 to 7.5, it is a potent peripheral vasodilator that relaxes vascular smooth muscle. It functions by opening up the heart’s blood vessels allowing blood to run more freely, thus helping the doctors to see more clearly by radionuclide. It lessens vascular tone and reduces systolic, diastolic or the average arterial blood pressure linked with an impulse increase in the heart rate. Though it can be used by patients of all age groups, its safety and efficacy in patients aged less than 18 years has not been ascertained.
Precautions / Side Effects Of Adenoscan
Its effectiveness with other cardioactive drugs or adenosine receptor antagonists has not yet been methodically evaluated. You are advised to be cautious when using brand or generic Adenoscan with calcium channel blockers or cardiac glycosides. It is best to avoid using such drugs prior to using Adenoscan drug. It is similar to other nucleosides and generates a range of chromosomal alterations. You are advised not to use Adenosine during pregnancy, as its impact on an unborn has not been established. It is also unknown if Adenoscan can enter breast milk.
It is usually not recommended for patients with severe blood pressure, asthma or someone who has had a heart transplant. Drinking large amounts of caffeine containing drinks may come in the way of Adenosine’s functioning. Talk to your doctor if you have a history of lung diseases, epilepsy or heart problems. Medicines like theophylline or aminophylline, dipyridamole and carbamazepine may be influenced by brand or generic Adenoscan. Common side effects include cough, drowsiness, blurred vision, back discomfort, weakness etc.
Adenoscan Dosage
The recommended dose for adults is 140 mcg/kg/min injected for 6 minutes with a total dose 0.84 mg/kg. Again the dosage is mostly based upon the patient’s weight. After the first three minutes of Adenoscan, Thallium-201 must be infused at the point of Adenoscan infusion, which is for imaging. The clear colourless solution comes in glass vials. Take precautions if there is an accidental overdose. There is no other alternative protocol for Adenoscan infusions. Safety and efficacy of intracoronary route is not established.
