General Information On Aldomet
Aldomet is indicated for the treatment of hypertension or high blood pressure. The generic name of this drug is Methyldopa. It is meant for oral administration only.
Aldomet works by reducing the production of certain chemicals, and this in turn allows the arteries and veins to relax. When the blood vessels relax, the flow of blood improves. This allows the heart to relax and beat more slowly.
In addition to Methyldopa, the active ingredient in the formulation, Aldomet oral tablets also contain the following inert ingredients: cellulose, calcium disodium edetate, citric acid, D&C Yellow 10, colloidal silicon dioxide, guar gum, ethylcellulose, iron oxide, titanium dioxide, magnesium stearate, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, propylene glycol, and talc.
Side effects of Aldomet
Aldomet is contraindicated in patients who have a hypersensitivity to Methyldopa. Patients who suffer from a liver disease such as cirrhosis should not use this drug.
The side effects of Aldomet are divided into two categories- mild and severe. The mild side effects of this drug include: epigastric distress (gas, constipation, mild diarrhea, bloating, or stomach pain), dry mouth, headache, stuffy nose, joint pain, muscle pain, drowsiness, weakness, dizziness, numbness, or breast swelling.
Severe side effects of Aldomet include: slow heart rate, severe muscle weakness, easy bruising, easy or unusual bleeding, swelling in the feet, ankles, or hands, loss of appetite, clay-colored stools, dark urine, upper abdominal pain, or yellowing of the eyes or skin. Consult your doctor if you experience any of these side effects during treatment.
You should seek immediate medical help if you experience an allergic reaction after taking an Aldomet oral tablet. Signs of an allergic reaction are: facial flushing, hives, skin rashes, itching, swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat, closing of the throat, shortness of breath, wheezing, and difficulty breathing.
The safety of this oral blood pressure medication in pregnant and breastfeeding women has not been studied. You should consult your physician before using Aldomet if you are pregnant or nursing an infant.
Certain drugs such as MAO inhibitors, lithium, ferrous sulfate, and others may interact with Aldomet. Before starting Aldomet treatment, inform your doctor about all the other drugs you are taking.
