Anafranil SR is called a tri-cyclic anti-depressant (TCA) agent. It is primarily used in the treatment and management of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). It is effective in patients who demonstrate obsession and compulsions. Besides this, the drug is also used in the treatment and management of various other conditions such as panic disorder, major depression, narcolepsy, de-personalization disorder, premature ejaculations, cataplexy and enuresis (urinating in the night sleep involuntarily) in adolescents and children. It is also used in treating chronic pain which may include headache associated with tension, pain associated with organic disease or pain in general. Brand or generic Anafranil SR acts by preventing the reabsorption or reuptake of neurotransmitters called nor-adrenaline and serotonin. These neurotransmitters are mood elevators. Precautions / Side Effects For Anafranil SR
Common side effects of Anafranil SR include dry mouth, drowsiness, headache, dizziness, confusion, anxiety, sleep disturbances, disturbances/changes in the taste, blurred vision, constipation, vomiting, nausea, sweating, change in appetite, difficult urination (or urine retention), sexual problems, hot flushes, weight gain, tremors and tinnitus (ringing in the ears). It may also cause twitching or other involuntary muscle movements. Other side effects of Clomipramine may include convulsions, abnormal heart beat, postural hypotension, which is drop in the blood pressure while sitting down, lying down or standing. The drug is not recommended for children below 18 years of age.

The initial dosage of Anafranil SR is as 25 mg per day. The drug is administered preferably during the bedtime. This helps in reducing the sedation effects during the daytime. Based on the tolerability of the patient, the dose is increased to 100 mg in adults and 3 mg/kg or 100 mg (whichever is lesser) in children during the first 2 weeks period.
