General Information On Angiomax
Angiomax is used for preventing blood clots in patients undergoing angioplasty and those who have severe chest pain or another condition. Angioplasty is a procedure used for opening blocked arteries.
The generic name of the drug is Bivalirudin, and it belongs to the therapeutic class of drugs known as anticoagulants. It is given to the patient in the form of an intravenous injection.
Angiomax keeps blood platelets from coagulating or clotting so that unwanted blood clots are not formed. The possibility of blood clotting increases if the patient has a blood vessel or heart condition.
Side effects of Angiomax
Angiomax is not meant to be taken by patients suffering from a kidney or liver disease or a blood clotting disorder such as hemophilia. Use sharp objects such as scissors, knives or blades with caution, as any cut or injury may result in heavy bleeding during Angiomax treatment. Also avoid alcohol intake during treatment, as doing so may increase risks of stomach or intestinal bleeding.
Some common side effects associated with Angiomax include nausea, stomach upset or pain, vomiting, restlessness, nervousness, pain in the pelvis or back, headache, fever or insomnia. Local area reactions may also occur, including irritation, bleeding, or pain at the site of the injection. Although these are mild side effects of the drug, you should notify your doctor if any of these become unmanageable.
Inform your doctor immediately if you have swelling or pain in one or both legs, black, tarry or bloody stools, sudden weakness or numbness on one side of the body, sudden headache, problems with balance, speech or vision, confusion, unstoppable bleeding, coughing up of blood, dark colored vomit, or decreased or stopped urination. These may be signs of a serious underlying condition that needs to be treated at once.
Sometimes, Angiomax may increase your blood pressure, the symptoms of which are blurred vision, severe headache, chest pain, seizures, numbness, or trouble concentrating. In rare cases, it can also decrease your blood pressure, which can be identified by fainting or lightheadedness.
Dosage of Angiomax
Usually, Angiomax 0.75mg/kg is given to a patient. However, the dosage largely depends on the patient’s medical condition, other medical conditions he or she is suffering from, and the patient’s response to treatment.
Angiomax is given as an intravenous bolus injection and as a continuous infusion following dilution and reconstitution. 5ml of sterile water is added to each 250mg vial of the medicine. The dosage administered to the patient also depends on his or her weight.
Your doctor may also decide to give you Angiomax along with aspirin. You should inform your doctor beforehand if you are already taking aspirin in an oral or injection form or if you have an allergy to it.
