General Information On Anquil
Anquil is used for controlling socially unacceptable sexual behavior caused due to certain mental illnesses. The generic name of its active ingredient is Benperidol, and it falls under the category of anti-psychotic medicines. Sometimes, Anquil is also referred to as a tranquilizer or neuroleptic, but it is not just a tranquilizer- it also works to treat a psychiatric illness.
Anquil works by blocking dopamine receptors in the patient’s brain. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter which transmits messages from one brain cell to the other. It regulates the behavior and mood of the patient in addition to other behavioral patterns. Over-stimulation of these dopamine receptors results in a psychiatric illness. Anquil blocks these dopamine receptors so that they are not over-stimulated and the mental illness can be controlled.
Anquil is available in the form of oral tablets that you have to take exactly as prescribed by your doctor. It is not to be used by children.
Side effects of Anquil
Some common side effects of Anquil include confusion, tiredness, reduced alertness, sleepiness, headache, difficulty sleeping, dizziness, agitation and excitement. These side effects can be easily managed with or without medical help. However, notify your doctor at once if any of these become too troublesome for the patient.
Seek immediate medical help if you have inappropriate milk secretion, changes in menstrual periods, increase in heart rate, decrease in blood pressure, constipation, swelling of the breasts, indigestion, vomiting or loss of appetite. In rare cases, some patients may also experience depression, convulsions, jaundice, weight changes, skin rash, swelling or itching, increased salivation, blood disorders, or mouth ulcers.
If you experience increased heart rate and sweating, you should inform your doctor at once, as it may lead to muscle stiffness, fever, reduced consciousness and faster breathing. Discontinue taking Anquil if you develop abnormal tongue movements. This may lead to some more movement problems including muscle spasms, twitching, restlessness, throat spasms, and trembling. Sometimes, abnormal movements or twitching in the mouth, throat, jaw or face, or rolling of eyes can also occur.
If you are experiencing pain, redness, or swelling in one or both legs, it may be signs of blood clotting in the veins of your legs. These clots may travel to your lungs and cause a breathing difficulty and chest pain. Therefore, inform your doctor immediately if you experience any of these symptoms.
Dosage of Anquil
Your doctor may recommend you to take one to six Anquil 0.25mg tablets a day. The dosage recommended to you depends on the type and severity of your mental illness. You will have to swallow the tablets whole with water, with or without meals.
Do not stop using the medicine if you feel that your symptoms have been relieved. There is a systematic procedure to discontinue Anquil. Your doctor will decrease your dosage gradually instead of discontinuing it at once. If you stop the drug suddenly, you may start experiencing sleeplessness, vomiting or sickness.
