General Information On Azelex

Azelex is indicated for the treatment of moderate or mild acne. The generic name of this drug is Azelaic Acid, and it belongs to a category of drugs referred to as dicarboxylic acids. It works by killing infection-causing bacteria.

The inactive ingredients present in this drug are: cetearyl octanoate, purified water, glycerin, cocoglycerides, cetearyl alcohol, propylene glycol, benzoic acid (preservative), cetyl palmitate, glyceryl stearate, and PEG-5 glyceryl stearate.

Azelex is meant for topical use only. It is not meant for ophthalmic or oral use. Azelex may be used for treating conditions other than the ones mentioned above. It is recommended that you consult a doctor before you buy Azelex.

Side effects of Azelex

Azelex is contraindicated in patients with a known allergy to azelaic acid and/or propylene glycol. An allergic reaction to Azelex is likely to worsen your condition and/or cause side effects such as hives, facial flushing, skin rashes, skin irritation, wheezing, difficulty breathing, or trouble swallowing. It is imperative that you consult a doctor immediately if you experience an allergic reaction after taking a dose of Azelex.

This topical cream is well tolerated by most people and is not expected to cause serious side effects. The common side effects of Azelex may include the following: burning, dryness, stinging, itching, redness, or tingling at the application site, or changes in your skin color. Consult your doctor if any of these side effects persist for a long time or become severe.

Azelex is a pregnancy category B drug. Simply put, this topical cream is not likely to cause any harm to the fetus. With that said, it is important that you consult your doctor before using this drug.

The contents of this drug may pass into the blood and enter breast milk. Although Azelex is not expected to harm a nursing child, its safety in breastfeeding women has not been established. If you are breastfeeding, consult your doctor before using Azelex.

Certain drugs, including over-the-counter and herbal medicines, may interact with Azelex. Therefore, it is recommended that you inform your doctor about all the drugs you are currently taking before using Azelex.

Azelex may also cause side effects other than the ones mentioned above. To know more about the risks associated with this drug, consult your physician or read the patient information leaflet.

Dosage of Azelex

The topical cream is available in one strength- Azelex 20%. Each gm of cream contains 0.2 gm of azelaic acid.

Apply a thin layer of Azelex on the affected area(s) twice daily, once in the morning and once in the evening, unless otherwise specified by your doctor. The treatment period may vary from case to case. Azelex may take some time—up to 4 weeks—to show positive results. Do not stop using the drug if you do not see immediate results. However, consult your doctor if no tangible improvement is witnessed after 4 weeks.
