General Information On Banzel
Banzel is used for controlling or preventing seizures associated with LGS or Lennox-Gastaut syndrome in patients over 4 years of age. LGS is a form of severe childhood epilepsy which causes behavioral and developmental problems in the patient.
The generic name of Banzel is Rufinamide, and it belongs to the class of anti-epileptic medicines or anticonvulsants. The medicine works by acting on the brain’s sodium channels. These channels carry excessive charges of electricity that trigger seizure episodes.
Banzel is available in the form of oral tablets that need to be given to the patient exactly as prescribed by the doctor.
Side effects of Banzel
Some mild side effects associated with Banzel include a stuffy nose, headache, sore throat, blurred vision, decreased or increased appetite, vomiting, loss of coordination or balance, tiredness, drowsiness or dizziness. Dosage of Banzel
Children over 4 years of age are given an initial dose of Banzel 10mg per kg per day, divided into 2 doses during the day. The dosage can be increased up to Banzel 45mg per kg per day, not exceeding Banzel 3200mg per day. If you are an adult, you will be given an initial dose of Banzel 400 to 800mg per day, divided into 2 doses. The maximum dose a patient can receive in a day is Banzel 3200mg per day.
The tablets have to be taken with food. Always wear a medical alert bracelet which states that you have seizures and that you are taking Banzel. Any dentist, doctor, or emergency care giver you are visiting or consulting should know that you are on Banzel treatment.
You will have to take Banzel as prescribed by your doctor. Do not discontinue taking it even if you feel that your symptoms have been relieved. Your doctor will gradually decrease the dosage and then ask you to stop taking it, instead of stopping it suddenly at once. This may worsen the condition and the seizures you will have now may be more severe.
