General Information on Benlysta
Benlysta is used for the treatment of active SLE or Systemic Lupus Erythematosus in adult patients. The generic name of its active ingredient is Belimumab, and it falls under the category of drugs known as monoclonal antibodies.
The drug works by affecting the actions of the patient’s immune system. Any monoclonal antibody targets and destroys only specific cells of the body so that healthy cells are protected from damage.
Benlysta is available in the form of an injection given to the patient intravenously. This drug is not meant to be used by patients who have a severe kidney problem caused due to SLE or if their SLE has affected their central nervous system including nerves, spinal cord, and brain.
Side effects of Benlysta
Some patients may have a reaction to the Benlysta infusion when it is administered into their vein. Inform your doctor right away if you have nausea, itchiness, lightheadedness, muscle pain, slow heart rate, or a severe headache after receiving the shot. Also seek medical help if you develop an allergic reaction to the drug. Symptoms of an allergy include swelling or itching on the face, tongue, throat or lips, severe dizziness, difficulty breathing, or hives.
Some common side effects that Benlysta patients may suffer from include stomach pain, diarrhea, nausea, mild pain in the legs or arms, or cold symptoms including sneezing, stuffy nose, or sore throat. However, inform your doctor at once if any of these symptoms worsen or persist.
Inform your doctor immediately if you experience any serious side effects of the drug. Such side effects include extreme mood changes, anxiety, depression, insomnia, suicidal thoughts, chest pain, wheezing, trouble breathing, chest tightness, increased urination, burning or pain while urinating, night sweats, cough with green or yellow mucus, bloody diarrhea, stabbing chest pain, or tenderness, redness, pain or swelling on any part of the body.
Dosage of Benlysta
The dosage recommended you depends on your medical condition, weight, and your response to the treatment. Usually, you will be given Benlysta 10mg/kg of your weight. The first three doses will be given at 2 week intervals, and after that, you will receive them at 4 week intervals. Benlysta is reconstituted, diluted and administered into the patient’s vein over a period of one hour.
If the patient develops a reaction, the infusion rate can be slowed down or interrupted. The infusion should be discontinued if a patient has a serious allergic reaction during the process.
The drug is available in the form of single use vials of 120mg and 400mg strengths. You can buy one as per the prescription of your doctor. Each Benlysta 5ml vial has 120mg Belimumab, and each Benlysta 20ml vial has 400mg Belimumab.
