Basic Information On Betaseron

Betaseron is used to treat relapsing-remitting kind of multiple sclerosis (MS). It promotes the cells that keep immune system in equilibrium and reduce cell inflammation. MS disease is caused when the immune system destroys myelin, the protective cover around nerve fibers. This leads to disruption of communication between brain and the rest of body. It weakens and debilitates the body. The Betaseron drug is made up of human proteins and produced by the bacterial fermentation of a strain of Escherichia coli. It helps decrease the frequency of relapses and delays the advance of the condition, if used in the initial stages of MS. It is injected subcutaneously on alternate days, into the skin of thighs, stomach or buttocks. This medication, however, is not a cure for MS.

Precautions / Side Effects Of Betaseron

Betaseron contains Interferon beta-1b. It may cause depressed mood, flu-like symptoms, headache, and skin rash. In case you experience more severe symptoms like suicidal thoughts, bruising, skin changes at the injection site, nausea, pounding heartbeat or loss of appetite, you should report these symptoms to your doctor. You should not use brand or generic Betaseron if you are allergic to interferons or human albumin. Before taking this medication, inform your doctor if you suffer from any liver disease, thyroid disorder, anemia, or any history of depression or suicidal behavior.

Interferon beta-1b belongs to pregnancycategory C. It can injure the fetus and may even cause miscarriage. Therefore, it must not be used by pregnant women. You must not self inject brand or generic Betaseron till you are fully trained in doing it. Draw the dosage into the syringe only when you are ready to inject yourself and use the disposable needle only once. Don't inject the medicine at the same spot twice in a row.

Betaseron Dosage

The recommended Betaseron dosage is a 0.25mg injection administered subcutaneously. The dosage is started at 0.0625mg and increased up to 0.25mg over a period of six weeks. It is given on alternate days. Your doctor should train you on how to self administer this medication properly. You should visually check the medication and discard it if it is discolored. You should also rotate injection sites. The lyophilized Betaseron injection is reconstituted by attaching it to a prefilled diluent syringe. In case the medication foams due to accidental shaking, keep the vial still to allow foam to settle down. The injection is given in the skin area of the stomach, buttocks, and thighs or back of the upper arm.
