General Information on Biaxin
Biaxin is used for treating certain bacterial infections of the skin and in the respiratory system of the patient. When used along with anti-ulcer medicines, it can treat certain stomach ulcers too. In some cases, a doctor may also ask you to buy Biaxin to prevent other bacterial infections.
The active ingredient in the medicine is Clarithromycin. Being a macrolide antibiotic, it performs its function by stopping the growth and spread of bacteria in the patient’s body.
You must remember that Biaxin is used for treating and preventing bacterial infections only, and will be ineffective against viral infections like flu or common cold. Overuse of an antibiotic may also lead to decreased effectiveness of the drug.
Side effects of Biaxin
Patients suffering from liver or kidney disease, porphyria, myasthenia gravis or Long QT syndrome should use this drug with caution, as they may have more risks of developing serious side effects of the drug.
Biaxin patients may commonly experience vaginal discharge or itching, mild rash or itching, headache, tooth discoloration, unpleasant or unusual taste in the mouth, stomach upset, diarrhea or vomiting. Although these are mild side effects of the drug, you should inform your doctor if any of these become intolerable.
Some serious side effects associated with Biaxin include chest pain, uneven heartbeat, shortness of breath, bloody or watery diarrhea, or problems with hearing. In some cases, the drug may also lead to severe skin reactions, symptoms of which are skin pain, sore throat, fever, swelling of the tongue or face, burning in the eyes, purple or red rashes on the face or upper body, and blistering or peeling. Seek medical attention immediately if you have any of these symptoms.
Sometimes, Biaxin may lead to a severe liver condition in the patient. Inform your doctor at once if you notice dark urine, yellowing of the eyes or skin, clay-colored stools, loss of appetite, upper stomach pain, nausea, itching, or low fever. Your doctor may need to take appropriate steps immediately.
Dosage of Biaxin
The usual recommended dosage is Biaxin 250mg twice a day, with or without meals. However, the dosage recommended to you depends on your medical condition, response to treatment, age, and other drugs you are taking at present. In order to prevent an upset stomach, you may be advised take it with milk or food.
In order to keep the level of Biaxin constant in your body, you should take it at the same time each day.
Complete the full course of treatment, even if you feel that your symptoms of infection have been fully relieved. The symptoms may get better before the infection is treated completely. If you stop taking the drug, the infection may come back and get worse. Therefore, you should take Biaxin for the entire treatment course.
