General Information on Bimectin
Bimectin is a veterinary medicine used for treating infestation and infections caused due to grubs, lungworms, gastrointestinal roundworms, mange mites and sucking lice in dairy cattle, beef cattle, veal, and swine.
Its generic name is Ivermectin, and it belongs to the class of drugs known as anti-parasitic agents. In swine and cattle, Bimectin kills ectoparasites and parasitic nematodes such as lice and mites. In the case of roundworm infections, it stimulates the release of neurotransmitters from the nerve endings, enhances their binding to special receptors of nerve junctions, and interrupts their nerve impulses. In this way, the roundworms are paralyzed and killed.
Bimectin is available in the form of an injection given to the animal subcutaneously. Since tapeworms and flukes do not have neurotransmitters or nerve impulse transmitters, Ivermectin is ineffective against these parasites. The drug only works by affecting the neurotransmitters of parasites.
Side effects of Bimectin
Transitory discomfort is observed in some animals after receiving a Bimectin shot. Soft tissue swelling is also noticed at the site of the injection in some animals. These are temporary side effects of the drug and subside without any medical help. However, you should inform the veterinarian if any of these symptoms worsen or persist. In order to reduce chances of site reactions and discomfort, you should divide the dose between different injection sites if it is more than 10ml.
Bimectin is meant to be given only subcutaneously, and should not be given intravenously or intramuscularly. Severe side effects may be triggered if you do so otherwise.
Dosage of Bimectin
One ml of Bimectin contains 10mg of Ivermectin. The recommended dosage is 200µg Ivermectin per kg of the cattle’s weight. This means that Bimectin 1ml is recommended to an animal weighing 50kg. If you are giving the injection to a swine, you need to administer Bimectin 1ml per 33kg of its weight. A swine needs 330µg Ivermectin per kg of its weight.
