General Information on Clarinex D

Clarinex D is a 12 or 24 hour extended release tablet given for the treatment of allergy symptoms such as watery eyes, sneezing, and runny nose. The generic name of Clarinex D is desloratadine, which belongs to the group of antihistamine drugs.

Clarinex D works by reducing the efficacy of a naturally produced chemical known as histamine. Histamine causes the body to experience symptoms such as itching, runny nose, sneezing and watery eyes. Apart from allergy symptoms, Clarinex D is also prescribed for the treatment of hives or itching of the skin caused by chronic skin reactions.

Side effects of Clarinex D

Clarinex D is not meant to be given to children younger than 12 years without consulting a doctor. You must not buy Clarinex D if you have previously suffered from an allergy to it or if you suffer from liver or kidney disease. Clarinex D contains pseudoephedrine sulfate, which may cause side effects in diabetes or hyperthyroidism patients.

Pseudoephedrine sulfate may also cause side effects in the cardiovascular and nervous systems of patients, such as weakness, dizziness, insomnia, tremors, or arrhythmia. Serious side effects such as convulsions, cardiovascular collapse, and hypotension may occur only in rare cases, but if they arise, you must seek immediate medical attention.

Other serious side effects of Clarinex D include yellowing of the eyes or skin, fever, and flu-like symptoms. You must contact your doctor at once if you suffer from any severe symptoms. Mild and temporary side effects include muscle pain, dry mouth, cough, sore throat, tiredness, drowsiness, headache, diarrhea and nausea. If these mild side effects become severe or do not wane after a period of time, then you must inform your doctor.

Dosage of Clarinex D

Clarinex D is indicated for the relief of non nasal as well as nasal symptoms of allergic rhinitis that occurs in adults or children who are 12 years of age or older. This medication must be administered when there is a need for an antihistaminic and nasal decongestant.

Both versions of this medication- the 12 hour and the 24 hour extended release tablets- are available in the form of oval shaped and blue colored oral tablets. The 12 hour extended release tablet has D 12 printed on it, while the other version of Clarinex D has ‘D 24’ printed on it.

The recommended dosage for both versions of Clarinex D is one tablet a day. This tablet must not be chewed or broken, as it may result in the release of a higher dose in your system which may lead to an overdose. If you doctor has prescribed a different dose of Clarinex D, you must follow only your doctor’s orders. Inform him/her about any other drug you take, as Clarinex D may interact with other medications.
