General Information on Clomid
Clomid is used for treating infertility in women. Its generic name is Clomiphene, and it belongs to the class of female reproductive agents. The drug works by stimulating the release of certain hormones that are required for ovulation to take place. Clomid is available in the form of oral tablets.
Clomid is effective only if the woman’s ovaries are able to produce follicles despite the deficiency of the required hormonal stimulation. It cannot be used for women whose ovaries can no longer produce eggs properly or the woman is suffering from ovarian failure or primary pituitary failure.
Side Effects of Clomid
Clomid patients can develop Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS). Symptoms of this syndrome include abdominal swelling or pain, weight gain, swollen legs or hands, shortness of breath, vomiting, or nausea. In some cases, OHSS can even prove to be fatal. Therefore, it is important to seek immediate medical help if you develop any of these symptoms.
Other side effects associated with Clomid include flushing, dizziness, diarrhea, nausea, breast discomfort or tenderness, vomiting, abnormal vaginal bleeding, mental or mood changes, blurred vision, headache, eye pain, visual disturbances or abnormal uterine bleeding. In some cases, ovarian enlargement can also take place, symptoms of which are pelvic pressure, swelling, tenderness or pain. Clomid may increase your risk of giving birth to multiple babies. This may lead to severe complications both for the mother and the babies. Even if no complications arise, you should be mentally prepared for twins, triplets, etc.
A serious allergic reaction may take place in some patients. Symptoms of an allergy to Clomid include trouble breathing, facial swelling, hives, or severe dizziness. Inform your doctor if you develop any of these symptoms. Discontinue the drug and seek medical help if any of these worsen or persist.
Dosage of Clomid
Initially, you will be given Clomid 50mg daily for 5 days. If the desired results are not achieved, the dosage can be increased to Clomid 100mg per day for another 5 days after 30 days of the last treatment. During these 30 days, it should be ensured that ovulation has not taken place and that pregnancy is not achieved. The dosage should not exceed 100mg per day for 5 days. More than 6 cycles of Clomid treatment are not recommended.
During Clomid treatment, your doctor may also advise you to record the time of your sexual intercourse and body temperature and to perform an ovulation test.
You will need to take the tablet at almost the same time each day with a full glass of water.
