General Information on Clopixol
Clopixol is used for treating mental illnesses such as schizophrenia associated with emotional reactions, behavior patterns, and thinking disturbances. It can also be used for treating manic depression, the symptoms of which are uninhibited behavior, overactivity, and excitement.
The generic name of the drug is Zuclopenthixol, and it belongs to the class of thioxanthene neuroleptics. Clopixol works by correcting the chemical imbalances in the brain that are responsible for causing mental illnesses.
Clopixol Acuphase Injection can be used for treating acute mental disorder episodes. It can also treat mania, which is identified by episodes of irritability, elation, and overactivity. Clopixol Depot Injection can be used for preventing future episodes of mental illnesses.
Side Effects of Clopixol
Some common side effects of Clopixol include dizziness, dry mouth, increased sweating and salivation, constipation, nausea, changes in menstrual periods, weight changes, impaired sex in men, skin rash, swelling of the feet, ankles, or hands, or itching. Inform your doctor immediately if any of these side effects become intolerable.
Seek medical help immediately if you suffer from shaking or trembling of the hands or fingers, shuffling walk, stiffness in the legs and arms, twisting movements in the body, uncontrolled or erratic movements of the tongue, mouth, jaw, or cheeks, dizziness, changes in blood pressure or heart rate, blurred vision, fainting, difficulty focusing, difficulty while urinating, unusual breast milk secretion, high pressure inside the eyes, breast enlargement in men, tiredness, easy bruising or bleeding, headache, jaundice, abdominal cramps, vomiting, or bloating with severe stomach pain.
In some cases, Clopixol may also lead to blood clotting in the veins, particularly in the legs. Symptoms of such a condition include pain, redness, or swelling in the legs. These blood clots may also travel to your lungs through the blood vessels and may cause a breathing difficulty and/ or chest pain. Inform your doctor immediately if you witness any of these symptoms.
Dosage of Clopixol
Clopixol oral tablets are available in 10mg strength. Clopixol Acuphase Injection has 50mg Zuclopenthixol per ml and Clopixol Depot Injection has 200mg Zuclopenthixol per ml.
If you are using Clopixol oral tablets, the dosage recommended may range from Clopixol 10mg per day to 50mg per day. In case of Clopixol Acuphase injection, you may be given Clopixol 50 to 150mg every 2 to 3 days for 2 weeks. The dosage should not exceed 4 injections totaling 400mg of the drug per treatment. If your doctor has decided to give you Clopixol Depot Injection, you will be given Clopixol 200 to 400mg every 2nd to 4th week.
You can take Clopixol tablets before or after food once a day, at almost the same time each day. The duration of treatment depends on the medical condition that needs to be treated, the severity of the condition, and other medical conditions you are suffering from.
