Basic Information on Comtan
Comtan is an FDA approved medication prescribed to treat Parkinson’s disease and is mostly recommended in combination with other levodopa/carbidopa-containing medications. Comtan or Entacapone is a reversible and selective inhibitor of catechol-o-methyltransferase (COMT). By inhibiting COMT, pharmacokinetic levels of levodopa are increased in the brain resulting in continuous dopaminergic stimulation in the brain. This stimulation has good effects on the signs and symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. Comtan has been reported to improve the “on time” of patients, i.e., ability to perform daily activities like walking, speaking, writing or dressing. It is advisable to avoid drinking alcohol while undergoing treatment with Comtan. It is also recommended to not stop taking Comtan abruptly; it has to be gradually ceased from the system.
Precautions/Side Effects for Comtan

Since Entacapone has no effect on Parkinson on its own, this drug is always taken along with levodopa/carbidopa. Common dose prescribed for Comtan is one tablet (200 mg) eight times daily. These tablets are administered concomitantly. In case of any problems during the treatment, the dosage of levodopa is reduced or the time interval between administrations of the drug is increased.
