General Information on Cromolyn
Cromolyn, also known as cromolyn sodium, is an anti-inflammatory drug used for the treatment of certain side effects caused by nasal allergies. These side effects include sneezing and an itchy, runny, or stuffy nose.
Cromolyn is available as an oral inhaler that can also be used for the prevention of asthma attacks. However, this medication cannot be administered for stopping an attack that has already begun. Cromolyn is also available as a nasal inhaler in order to treat the signs of allergic rhinitis, and as an ophthalmic solution for treating allergic conjunctivitis.
In addition to the above, Cromolyn is available as an oral solution and tablet for the management of mastocytosis. It is known to reduce certain side effects of this condition such as flushing, diarrhea, urticaria, abdominal pain, itching, and vomiting.
Irrespective of the method of dosage or the indications, Cromolyn has the same mode of action, which is stopping certain chemicals called histamines from being released in the body. These histamines are released by mast cells, which are commonly found in the eyelids, nose, and lungs.
