General Information on Demulen
Demulen is a hormonal birth control pill for women. It is a combination of two drugs with the generic names ethynodiol and ethinyl estradiol. Both these drugs are synthetic forms of naturally produced hormones.
Ethynodiol is a synthetic form of progesterone, while ethinyl estradiol is a form of estrogen. Both these hormones are responsible for several processes in the body. Demulen works by stopping the ovaries from ovulating. Ovulation is the process in which an egg is released from the ovary. Demulen also increases the thickness of the cervical mucus, making it difficult for the sperm to reach the egg. Demulen also changes the uterus lining, making it impossible for an egg, once fertile, to attach itself to the lining.
Demulen may be prescribed by a doctor for certain other conditions after evaluation.
