Depen is a chelating agent that is used in the treatment of Wilson disease (a condition where copper accumulates excessively in the body), cystinuria (excess of amino acids in the urine that can cause kidney stones) and severe rheumatoid arthritis that fail to respond to other treatments. It helps in the removal of excessive copper in people suffering from Wilson disease, reduction of excessive cystine in people suffering from cystinuria and reduction of activity of disease in people suffering from rheumatoid arthritis. It is a prescription medicine.
Precautions/Side Effects For Depen
Depen (D-Penicillamine) can cause severe side effects. You should be under strict supervision of a doctor if you are taking Depen drug. Side effects of taking brand or generic Depen include rash, itching, hives, tightness in chest, difficulty in breathing, swelling of face, lips, mouth or tongue or dark stools. Other side effects are bruising, bleeding, burning, peeling, itching or redness of skin, blood in the urine, changes in taste, dark urine, cough, chills, difficulty in urination, feeling of discomfort, fever, muscle weakness or joint pain. You may also experience serious stomach pain, skin lesions, shortness of breath, sore throat, vision problems, swelling of legs or feet, wheezing or weight gain.
You should not take brand or generic Depen if you are allergic to any ingredient of D-Penicillamine, if you have had agranulocytosis or aplastic anemia in the past, you have kidney problems, blistering skin disease, blood in urine or if you are undergoing gold therapy, oxyphenbutazone medication, ant malarial medication like carboplatin or quinine or phenylbutazone. You should consult a care provider before taking the drug if you are planning to undergo any surgery.
Depen Dosage
Depen is available in dosage strengths of 125 mg and 250 mg. It should be taken with a full glass of water. It should be taken on an empty stomach. It is advisable to take it at least one hour before or two hours after a meal. If you take the drug with food, its effectiveness decreases to a great extent. You should not discontinue the use of Depen without consulting your doctor as sudden stoppage of therapy can cause your body to react in an unusual fashion. Similarly, if you stop taking the medication, you should not start its usage without consulting a doctor.
