Basic Information On Didronel
Didronel is primarily used to treat patients with Osteoporosis or Paget disease and for the treatment of an abnormal bone growth after an injury in the spinal cord or after a hip replacement procedure (also known as Heterotopic Ossification). It basically reduces bone loss and increases production of new bones by reducing the release of calcium from bones. It is a bisphosphonate drug. The Didronel drug is also administered to people suffering from hypercalcemia as it helps reduce the excess calcium in the blood. It is a white, water soluble tablet and is administered orally.
Precautions/Side Effects For Didronel
Didronel contains Etidronate Disodium. Possible side effects of the drug include gastrointestinal discomfort like diarrhea, gastritis, mild stomach pain, indigestion and nausea. Increased incidents of headaches, leg cramps and anthralgia are also possible. It is advisable to contact your doctor right away if you experience severe allergic reactions including rashes, hives, swelling of the mouth, face, lips or experience difficulty in breathing after using brand or generic Didronel . Other symptoms that require urgent medical attention include severe pain in the bones, muscles or joints, long lasting stomach pain, sores in the mouth, bloody, tarry or black stools, chest pain, fever, chills and possibly a sore throat.
Etidronate Disodium should not be used if you have osteomalacia or oesophagus problems. It should not be combined with anticoagulants as it could result in more severe side effects such as bleeding. The effect of brand or generic Didronel on the fetus is not clear and hence it is not recommended for pregnant women.
Didronel Dosage
Didronel is administered orally as a single dose. Being a bisphosphonate, it should be taken with a full glass of water. For Paget disease, the recommended dosage is 5mg per kg of body weight per day for the first 6 months or 11mg to 20mg per kg of body weight per day for the first 3 months. For patients with injuries in the spinal cord, the dosage is 20mg/kg/day for 2 weeks following which, 10mg/kg/day can be administered for 10 weeks. For patients with total hip replacement, 20mg/kg/day is recommended for 1 month before and 3 months after the replacement surgery. You should not take dairy products and antacids for 2 hours after the dose.
