Basic Information On Efudex Cream
Efudex cream is used for topical treatment of Actinic Keratoses (AKs). Skin may be affected due to exposure to Sun’s ultraviolet rays over a long period. Small patches, either flat or raised with a white top which are rough to touch may form on the skin. These lesions may be tan, brown or reddish-brown in color and may be a few millimeters in size. AKs may appear on face, arms or legs or any exposed part. If not treated correctly and promptly, AKs can develop into a form of skin cancer called squamous cell carcinoma. Efudex contains fluorouracil which acts by blocking the growth of the unhealthy cells which gradually die away leaving the healthy cells intact. People in any age group may use the cream.
Precautions / Side Effects of Efudex cream
If you are pregnant or planning pregnancy in the near future, avoid using brand or generic Efudex. While it is not known whether Fluorouracil is secreted in breast milk, it is safer to avoid it during nursing. Efudex is meant only for external application.
You may become more sensitive to Sun during treatment with the drug containing with Fluorouracil. Wear protective clothing and sunscreen or carry an umbrella while going out. Avoid exposure to Sun and solar lamps. The treatment with Efudex drug lasts a minimum three to six weeks and may be as long as 10 to 12 weeks. The AKs or sBCC lesions may become red and irritate more. This should not cause concern because the unhealthy cells are being eliminated due to the Fluorouracil action. Trouble in sleeping, eye irritation may occur during medication. Temporary hair loss, mild pain where you have applied the brand or generic Efudex cream is likely. Do not apply on parts like eyes, nose, mouth which contain mucous membranes. Consult your doctor if you are taking other medication or if irritation is more.

Wash the affected parts with warm water and soap and pat them dry with a towel. Put on medical gloves and apply Efudex cream (Fluorouracil) with the forefinger. Spread gently only on the affected parts. Wash away if the cream has touched any other parts of the body. Do not cover the area with bandage. Take extra care when applying the cream near eyes, nose or mouth. Before application, always take your doctors advise to confirm the exact dosage.
