General Information on Elimite
Elimite is indicated for the treatment of scabies (Sarcoptes scabiei infestation) and head lice. In addition, this drug is also used to treat conditions caused by a variety of other pests such as fleas, mites, and ticks.
The generic name of this drug is Permethrin Topical and it falls under the category of drugs known as anti-parasite medications. Elimite is meant for topical use only. As it is a prescription drug, you need a doctor’s prescription to buy Elimite.
Elimite is available in form of a cream and comes in one strength- Elimite 5%. The concentration of Permethrin, the active component in this preparation, is 5%. In other words, every 1 gm of Elimite cream contains 50 mg of Permethrin.
In addition to Permethrin, Elimite cream also contains the following inert ingredients: carbomer 934 P, Butylated hydroxytoluene, glyceryl Monostearate, fractionated coconut oil, isopropyl myristate, glycerine, polyoxyethylene cetyl ethers, lanolin alcohols, sodium hydroxide, and mineral oil. The preservative used in the preparation is formaldehyde.
Side effects of Elimite
You should not buy Elimite if you have a known hypersensitivity to permethrin any other constituent present in it, or chrysanthemums. A hypersensitive reaction is likely to cause skin rashes or irritation. If the reaction is severe, the following serious symptoms may also be seen: facial flushing, closing of the throat, or difficulty breathing. You must seek immediate medical help if you experience any of these side effects during treatment.
In general, Elimite is well tolerated. This drug rarely, if ever, causes a serious side effects. Having said that, it is recommended that you discuss the risks attached with this drug with your doctor or read the patient information leaflet before starting treatment.
Common side effects of Elimite may include, but are not limited to: redness, stinging, itching, mild burning, or numbness at the application site. You should consult your doctor if any of these side effects become a cause for concern.
Elimite falls under pregnancy category B, which means that this drug is not expected to cause harm to a developing fetus. However, it is recommended that you consult your doctor before using this drug if you are pregnant.
The administration of Elimite in breastfeeding women should only be considered if the expected benefit to the mother is greater than any risk to the fetus.

Dosage of Elimite
Generally, 30 gm of Elimite is enough for treating scabies and head lice in adults. To treat scabies, apply a fine layer of the cream to your body from the neck down. Rub the cream gently to ensure that it works properly. Wash off the medication with water after 8-14 hours.
To treat head lice, wash your hair with shampoo, dry your hair, and then apply the cream. Leave the cream on for about 10 minutes. After this, wash your hair with water.
