Basic Information On Emend
Emend is an anti-emetic drug. It belongs to the SPA (substance P antagonist) class of drugs. It is used to prevent chemotherapy induced-nausea and vomiting (CINV) and post-operative nausea and vomiting (PONV). The drug is used to prevent of delayed and acute nausea and vomiting which is associated with the repeated courses of emetogenic chemotherapy. The drug is administered as a prevention measure (pre and post chemotherapy). Nausea and vomiting is considered to be a serious side effect of emetogenic chemotherapy. Brand or generic Emend acts by inhibiting the NK1 receptor (neurokinin receptor). Once the NK1 receptor (located in the CNS and PNS) gets activated, it results in vomiting reflux. Thus the inhibition of NK1 receptor helps in reducing the risk of nausea and vomiting in chemotherapy patients.
