Veramyst is a solution (or aqueous suspension) that is used as a nasal spray. The drug is a corticosteroid that is synthetic and fluorinated. It is used for treating the symptoms related to the nasal allergies. The drug is also effective in treating seasonal as well as perennial rhinitis. The drug has anti-inflammatory effect. The drug shows it anti-inflammatory effects on various cells as well as mediators (of inflammation). These cells include lymphocytes, macrophages, neutrophils, eosinophils and mast-cells. The mediators include cytokines, leukotrienes, eicosanoids and histamines. Brand or generic Veramyst inhibits the antigen induced eosinophilia in the lungs, inhibits the inflammation causing transcription-factor (NFkB) and activates the gluco-corticoid response elements. However, the accurate mode of action of the drug is not known.
Precautions / Side Effects Of Veramyst Nasal Spray
Veramyst nasal spray drug has certain side effects that are more common in occurrence. These more common side effects of the drug are cough, shortness of breath, unexplained bleeding from the nose, headache, vomiting, sore throat and irritation/ burning/ dryness in the nose. After administering the nasal spray if you have any of these side effects, then inform your doctor and continue with the treatment. However, if you feel that the side effects of Fluticasone Furoate are bothering you or worsening then get medical help immediately.
Veramyst nasal spray also has certain rare (or less common) side effects. These may include white patches within the throat or nose, runny nose, excessive mucus (in the nose), dizziness, weakness, general aches or pains, fever, stomach pain, lack of appetite or diarrhea. If you have any of these rare side effects then let your doctor know immediately. Avoid the administration of Fluticasone Furoate if you are allergic to it or to any of the drug’s components.
Veramyst Nasal Spray Dosage
Brand or generic Veramyst nasal spray is meant for administration through intra-nasal route only. It is not recommended for children below the age of 2 years. For children from age of 2-11 years the initial recommended dose is 55 mcg to be administered daily once. It is taken as 1 spray per nostril; each spray is equivalent to 27.5 mcg of the drug. In adults/adolescents 110 mcg of the drug is instilled as 2 sprays per nostril. Re-evaluation of the patient is recommended if there is no improvement in the symptoms of the condition even after 3 weeks of treatment with Veramyst nasal spray.
