General Information on Equimax Oral Paste
Equimax Oral Paste is used for removing parasites from ponies or horses, including pinworms, bots, hairworms and tapeworms. The drug is a combination of two generic medications: Ivermectin and Praziquantel.
Equimax Oral Paste is a parasite control chemical and falls under the therapeutic class of drugs known as anthelmintics and boticides. It is administered to a horse with the help of a syringe.
Praziquantel in the drug causes the parasites to disintegrate by damaging their skin while Ivermectin binds to their glutamate-gated chloride ion channels, as a result of which they become paralyzed and eventually die.
Side effects of Equimax Oral Paste
Equimax Oral Paste is only meant for ponies and horses. Other animals, including dogs or cats, may suffer from serious interactions if they are given this medicine. You should not smoke, eat, or drink anything while handling this drug as you may accidentally ingest it and endanger your health. As Equimax Oral Paste is harmful for aquatic animals too, you should not dispose it off in water.
If a horse is being given Equimax Oral Paste for treatment of a heavy threadworm infection, it may experience swelling or itching on its body. This is because a large number of parasites are dying on its body, which is a sign that the drug is working. As such, this side effect is no cause for concern.
In some instances, Equimax Oral Paste can also lead to summer sores on the horse’s body, resulting in excessive tissue damage. In that case, you should inform the veterinarian, who may control the situation by recommending some other drugs along with Equimax Oral Paste.
Some horses may also develop an allergic reaction to Equimax Oral Paste. Symptoms of an allergy include hives, swelling or irritation, or excessive drooling. Stop giving the drug to your horse or pony and seek immediate medical help if it suffers from any of these symptoms.
Before you buy Equimax Oral Paste for your horse, you must inform the veterinarian if it is pregnant, nursing, or breeding as some special adjustments may be required in such circumstances.
Dosage of Equimax Oral Paste
Do not buy Equimax Oral Paste if your pony or horse is less than 4 weeks of age. The veterinarian will advise you to give Equimax Oral Paste 91mcg per 220lbs of weight to your horse. One syringe can hold enough Equimax Oral Paste to treat a horse weighing 1320 lbs.
In order to give the drug to your horse, you will have to place the syringe between its teeth and depress the plunger. This will deposit the drug on the back of the horse’s tongue. Try to tilt its head back for about 5-10 seconds after administration so that Equimax Oral Paste can get properly absorbed by its system.
Equimax Oral Paste must only be administered orally to a horse. Avoid getting it in contact with its eyes, nose or ears. If this happens, wash the area thoroughly with water. If irritation persists, contact the veterinarian immediately, as severe irritation may take place.
