General Information on FML
FML can be used to treat certain conditions of the eye caused due to inflammation or an injury. Its active ingredient is Fluorometholone, and it falls under the group of corticosteroids.
FML is available in the form of an ophthalmic solution which needs to be applied directly into the affected eye. It prevents the release of certain chemicals in the body that cause inflammation. By doing this, FML relieves the symptoms of an eye condition, including swelling, redness, or itching.
Side effects of FML
Do not buy FML if you have an allergy to it or to any other corticosteroids. Special tests and dosage adjustments may be needed if you have glaucoma, cataracts, severe myopia, or diabetes, or if you recently underwent an eye surgery.
Your vision may become blurred for around 3-5 minutes immediately after applying the eye drops. During this period, you should not drive a vehicle, operate a machine, or do any such activity that calls for clear vision. Otherwise, a serious accident or mishap may take place.
Usually, your doctor will not advise you to wear contact lenses while using FML, but if you cannot do without lenses, you should remove them before applying the eye drops and wait for 15 minutes before putting them back on. This is because the drug may contain preservatives that can damage the surface of your lenses.
Do not buy FML if you are already using any other oral or topical corticosteroid or ophthalmic solution. If your doctor has approved any other ophthalmic solution or ointment to be used along with FML, maintain a gap of 10 to 15 minutes between each dose. If you are using an eye ointment, apply FML before the ointment. If you apply the ointment before FML, the eye drops will not be able to get absorbed by your eyes.
FML patients may commonly experience burning or stinging in the eyes after applying the eye drops. These are temporary side effects of the drug and subside within 3-5 minutes. However, you must inform your doctor promptly if any of these symptoms persist or worsen.
Using more FML than required or for a longer period than prescribed can lead to a serious eye condition such as glaucoma or cataract. Inform your doctor immediately if you suffer from pain in the eyes or have problems with vision.
FML may mask signs of a new infection. Therefore, watch out for symptoms like eye discharge, swelling or redness, or severe vision problems. Inform your doctor immediately if no signs of improvement are noticed after using the drug or if you experience headache or severe dizziness during FML treatment.
Dosage of FML
Your doctor will advise you to apply 1-2 drops of FML 2-3 times a day. The duration for which you have to use the drug may range from 2 to 15 days, depending on the severity and type of your eye condition.
Try to apply the eye drops at almost the same time each day.
