Famvir is an anti-viral drug. It is also referred to as guanine analogue. It is used in treating several infections caused by herpes-virus. In immune-deficient adults it is used in the treatment of herpes labialis (cold sores) which is recurring in nature. In adults who are HIV infected, the drug is indicated in treating recurring genital and recurring orolabial herpes. It is also used in the treatment of shingles which is referred to as herpes zoster. In the treatment of recurrent genital herpes 1000 mg drug is administered twice only for one day. As a suppressive therapy 250 mg of the drug is administered daily twice. In treating shingles (herpes zoster) 500 mg of the drug is administered every 8 hours for a period of 7 days. In HIV infected patients (adults) the treatment of recurrent genital herpes and orolabial herpes is treated with 500 mg of Famvir drug, daily twice for 7 days.
