General Information on Flagyl ER
Flagyl ER is used for the treatment of certain vaginal infections. Its generic name is Metronidazole, and it belongs to the group of nitroimidazole antibiotics.
As an antibiotic, Flagyl ER works by stopping the growth and spread of protozoa or bacteria that are responsible for the infection. It is available in the form of oral tablets.
You must remember that Flagyl ER can be used only for treating protozoa or bacterial infections. As such, you must not buy Flagyl ER to treat viral or yeast infections. The medication can also be used to treat bacterial or protozoal infections in the stomach, joints, respiratory tract, or skin.
Side effects of Flagyl ER
Do not buy Flagyl ER if you have a liver or kidney disease, nervous system disorder, seizures, blood disorder, or Crohn’s disease. Also avoid consuming alcohol during Flagyl ER treatment, as severe vomiting, nausea, stomach upset, flushing, or headache may occur.
Patients using Flagyl ER may commonly experience stomach pain, nausea, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, loss of appetite, changes in taste, constipation, heavy coating on the tongue, or a dry mouth. The drug may also make your urine a little darker in color. These are mild side effects of Flagyl ER that can be easily managed with or without medical help. However, you should inform your doctor at once if any of these worsen or persist.
You should seek immediate medical help if you suffer from seizures, unsteadiness, painful urination, mental or mood changes, or numbness or tingling in the feet or hands during Flagyl ER treatment. Some other serious side effects of the drug include eye pain, sudden vision changes, stiff or painful neck, severe or persistent headache, sore throat, unusual bleeding or bruising, persistent fever, persistent nausea or vomiting, or severe stomach pain.
Using excess Flagyl ER or taking it for a longer period than prescribed may lead to a new vaginal yeast infection or oral thrush. Notify your doctor immediately if you witness any changes in vaginal discharge or have white patches in your mouth.
Stop taking Flagyl ER and inform your doctor immediately if you develop an allergic reaction to it. Symptoms of an allergy include hives, difficulty breathing, facial swelling, or severe dizziness.
Dosage of Flagyl ER
In case of a bacterial vaginal infection, your doctor will advise you to take Flagyl ER 750mg once a day for 7 days. You will have to take the tablet one hour before and 2 hours after food.
Since these are extended release tablets, you should take them whole, without crushing, chewing, or dissolving them.
You should take Flagyl ER for the full period of prescription even if your condition improves over time. If you stop taking the drug suddenly, the bacteria may multiply in your body, and the infection may return.
In order to ensure that Flagyl ER is helping your condition, your doctor will need to conduct regular blood tests during treatment. Therefore, visit your doctor regularly and do not miss any scheduled appointments with him/her.
