Invirase is used in highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) to treat patients with HIV (human immunodeficiency virus). The HIV virus requires an enzyme called HIV protease to reproduce and this drug inhibits the production of that enzyme thereby limiting the HIV virus. It should not be taken on an empty stomach. The tablets should be kept at room temperature and never be frozen as they contain gel. In hot conditions, they may be refrigerated. The Invirase drug must be taken in conjunction with 100mg of ritonavir everyday. If a dose is missed, the next dose should be taken earlier than scheduled. However, it must not be doubled. When Invirase is taken with lopinavir/ritonavir, then additional 100mg of ritonavir is not required to be taken.
