Basic Information On Janumet
Janumet is basically an oral medication for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. It should not be used for patients dependent on insulin or patients having type 1 diabetes. It can be used in conjunction with other anti-diabetic medication. Janumet is a DDP-4 inhibitor and hence inhibits the growth of the enzyme called dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DDP-4). The Janumet drug helps control blood sugar in the patient’s body by regulating insulin levels after food intake. It decreases the level of glucose produced and absorbed by the body. Janumet has to be combined with diet, weight control, exercise, etc. to bring diabetes mellitus under control.
Precautions/Side Effects For Janumet
Common side effects of brand or generic Janumet are gas, nausea, stomach upset, indigestion, headaches, sore throat and running nose. When administered with Rosiglitazone, it leads to swelling of the hands and feet. It should not be administered to patients who have type 1 diabetes mellitus or to patients who are allergic to its ingredients. Janumet contains sitagliptin and metformin. Patients with pancreatitis should consult their doctor before taking Janumet. It should not be used in the treatment of Ketoacidosis. A rare but possible and serious side effect is lactic acidosis. You should seek immediate medical attention if you develop symptoms relating to lactic acidosis.
Sitagliptin should not be administered to children below the age of 18 months without prior consultation with the doctor. As such, it is not known to be harmful to the fetus. Alcohol consumption should be completely avoided when taking the drug.

Janumet is administered orally twice a day with meals. Dosage can be adjusted based on current treatment and tolerability of side effects but maximum dosage should not exceed 100 mg sitagliptin and 2000 mg metformin. The condition of the patient’s kidney also determines the dosage of Janumet. Dosage should be regulated to prevent low blood sugar in case the patient is taking more than one medicine for diabetes. Patients who are inadequately controlled with exercise and diet can start with doses of 50 mg sitagliptin/500 mg metformin twice daily while those on metformin monotherapy can take 50 mg sitagliptin/1000 mg metformin twice daily. Those on sitagliptin monotherapy should take 50 mg sitagliptin/500 mg metformin twice daily.
