Lescol is a member of the statins class of drugs used to treat hypercholesterolemia and for prevention of cardiovascular diseases. It is an enzyme blocker and blocks the enzyme required for the production of cholesterol. The drug aids in reduction of LDL cholesterol levels in the blood, thereby reducing the risk of heart problems. It is prescribed to treat adults and children who are at least 10 years old when non-drug treatment options like diet and exercise have been unsuccessful in reducing the cholesterol levels. Intake of the drug may create stomach upset accompanied by abdominal pain and indigestion. Inform your doctor if severe abdominal pain along with nausea and fatigue occurs. Lescol drug might affect tissues in the muscle due to presence of fluvastatin and hence consult a physician in case of muscle pain, tenderness or general weakness. The muscle damage caused can lead to possible kidney failure. Lescol drug is a supplement for cholesterol reduction and not a substitute, so it should accompanied by a special cholesterol reducing diet. Never crush, open or chew the tablet or capsule. In case of paediatric patients, the recommended dosage is one 20mg capsule to a maximum of 80mg with a 6 week interval. Store the drug at 15 -30ºC (59 -86ºF) in a tight container protected from light.
