Basic Information On Leukeran
Leukeran is a nitrogen-mustard alkylating-agent. It is a chemotherapy drug. It is used primarily for the treatment of malignant lymphomas (such as lymphosarcoma), leukemia (chronic lymphatic/lymphocytic leukemia), Hodgkin’s disease and giant-follicular lymphoma. It is used also used as an immuno-suppressant agent for several inflammatory conditions and auto-immune diseases like nephritic syndrome. The drug is not used as a cure for the above mentioned lymphomas or cancers. Brand or generic Leukeran works through several modes of action. It prevents the synthesis of DNA and transcription of RNA by affecting the DNA fragmentation. It forms cross-links and hence damages the DNA. This does not allow the damaged DNA to transcribe or synthesize. Lastly, the drug induces mutations by causing mis-pairing of certain nucleotides.
