General Information on Lovaza

Lovaza is used for lowering triglyceride level in the patient’s blood. Active ingredients in the medicine are Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. These acids are not produced naturally in the body, and need to be consumed through diet. If you do not receive enough amounts of these acids, your body will start producing a lot of triglycerides. This may lead to conditions such as heart disease, coronary artery disease or stroke.

Lovaza works by lowering the level of triglycerides produced by the body. Your doctor will prescribe you to buy Lovaza along with a diet plan and exercise regime.

The patient needs to take this medicine in the form of oral capsules.

Side effects of Lovaza

Before you buy Lovaza, inform your doctor if you have liver disease, pancreas disorder, diabetes or an underactive thyroid. Also, inform your doctor if you consume alcohol regularly. Such patients may have more chances of developing serious side effects of the drug.

Some common side effects of the drug include back pain, mild skin rash, upset stomach, unpleasant or unusual taste in mouth or belching. These are mild side effects of the drug and can be easily managed with or without medical help. However, you should inform your doctor at once if any of these become too bothersome.

Seek immediate medical help if you develop chest pain, uneven heartbeats, flu symptoms, body ache, chills or fever during Lovaza treatment. These may be signs of some serious underlying condition and needs to be treated as soon as possible.

Your doctor will advise you to follow a diet plan, exercise regime and weight control program too along with Lovaza treatment. You should follow this program very strictly. Changing the program even in a small way may have significant effects on the drug’s working.

Some patients may experience an allergy to the medicine, especially if you are allergic to soybeans or fish. Symptoms of an allergy include hives on body, difficulty breathing, severe dizziness, or swelling on face, throat, lips or tongue.

Dosage of Lovaza

Daily recommended dosage is Lovaza 4gm per day. You can take four Lovaza 1gm capsules at a time, or take two Lovaza 1gm capsules twice in a day.

Swallow the capsule whole, without crushing, chewing, opening, breaking or dissolving it. Your doctor will advise you to follow a lipid-lowering diet before and during Lovaza treatment.

Drug Interactions of Lovaza

Before starting treatment with Lovaza, you should inform your doctor about all the prescription and non-prescription medicines you are taking at present. He or she will not recommend you to start Lovaza treatment if you are already taking blood thinners (e.g. warfarin), estrogens (hormone replacement medicines or contraceptive pills), beta-blockers (e.g. atenolol, labetalol, nadolol or carvedilol) or diuretics (e.g. chlorothiazide, indapamide or hydrochlorothiazide).

In addition to these, inform your doctor about all the herbal preparations and health supplements you are using at present. Drugs may interact with each other, may decrease each other’s efficacy and may even lead to serious results that can be harmful for your health. Therefore, consult with your doctor before taking any other drug during Lovaza treatment.
