Basic Information on Lumigan 0.03%
Brand or generic Lumigan 0.03% solution is prescribed to reduce high levels of intraocular pressure in cases of open angle glaucoma. Glaucoma is a major cause of blindness in adults distressing over 70 million people across the world. In healthy eyes, the fluids are drained out regularly through the passageways. The pressure inside the eyes builds up abnormally (ocular hypertension) when this drainage is affected. The abnormal IOP (intraocular pressure) in turn, escalates the mechanical stress on the head of the optic nerve. Such stress may gradually cause irreversible damage of the ganglion cell axons in the retina and finally leading to blindness.
Lumigan acts by imitating the property of prostamides (a natural substance in the body) and helps to improve the drainage of fluids through uveoscleral route and trabecular mesh-work. The improved drainage relieves the pressure on the optic nerve and in turn controls glaucoma.
