General Information on Macrodantin

Macrodantin is used for the treatment and prevention of bacterial urinary tract infections. The active ingredient in the medicine is Nitrofurantoin Macrocrystal, and it comes under the category of antibiotics.

This medicine acts by interfering with the growth and spread of susceptible bacteria in the body. In this way, the bacterial infection is treated. The patient receives this medicine in the form of oral capsules.

Before you buy Macrodantin, you must remember that this medicine is used only to treat bacterial infections, and is ineffective on any yeast or viral infection.

Side effects of Macrodantin

Children less than one month of age should not receive this medication, as they have significant chances of developing a certain blood related problem termed as hemolytic anemia.

Your doctor will not recommend you to buy Macrodantin if you are suffering from a kidney disease or reduced or stopped urination or if you have developed jaundice or a liver problem due to Nitrofurantoin in the past.

Your doctor will need to make some special adjustments if you have a kidney disease, G6PD deficiency, a debilitating disease, vitamin B deficiency, electrolyte imbalance, anemia or diabetes.

This medicine can be taken during first and second trimesters of pregnancy. However, it should not be taken during the last trimester, as it may harm the unborn baby or create complications during the delivery.

Macrodantin patients can commonly experience vaginal discharge, itching, rust-colored or brownish urine, vomiting, mild diarrhea or upset stomach. These are mild side effects of the drug and can be easily managed with or without medical help. However, you should seek medical help if any of these become too troublesome.

Some serious side effects of the drug include pain behind the eyes, severe headache, vision problems, ringing in ears, red pinpoints under the skin, skin peeling or red skin rash, severe blistering, patchy skin color, clay-colored stools, dark urine, yellowing of eyes or skin or easy bleeding and bruising. Also seek medical attention if you develop weakness, confusion, pale skin, tingly or numb feeling in feet or hands, fever, chills, body ache, wheezing, weight loss, dry cough, hack, sudden chest pain or discomfort, shortness of breath or watery or bloody diarrhea.

Dosage of Macrodantin

Adult patients will need to take Macordantin 50 to 100mg four times daily. Pediatric patients will be given Macrodantin 5 to 7mg per kg of their body weight four times daily. Treatment with Macrodantin usually lasts for 7 to 10 days, depending on the type and severity of the infection.

In order to improve drug tolerance and absorption, you will be advised to take the capsules with food.

Drug Interactions of Macrodantin

Your doctor will not recommend you to buy Macrodantin along with quinolone antibiotics (such as norfloxacin or ciprofloxacin), rifamycins (such as rifampin or rifabutin) or hormonal contraceptives (such as birth control pills, patches or rings).

Apart from these, inform your doctor about all the prescription and non-prescription drugs you are taking at present, including generic and branded medicines, herbal preparations and nutritional supplements.
