General Information on Magnevist

Magnevist is given to a patient during MRI in order to help diagnose a disorder related to the heart, brain, blood vessels or spinal tissues. Active ingredient in the medicine is Gadopentetate Dimeglumine and it comes under the category of contract agents producing magnetic effects.

The medicine works by allowing the blood vessels and organs of the patient to become visible more clearly. It is given to the patient in the form of an injection during the MRI procedure.

Side effects of Magnevist

Patients suffering from a kidney disease in advanced stages will not be recommended to buy Magnevist. Such patients may develop a fatal condition because of this medicine. Symptoms of such a condition include skin redness or discoloration, trouble moving, deep bone pain in ribs or hips, joint stiffness in legs, feet, arms or hands, skin itching or burning or swelling, scaling, hardening, tightening or weakness in muscles.

Also inform your doctor if you have hay fever, diabetes, asthma, liver disease, high blood pressure or allergy to contrast agents. Also, tell him if you have recently gone through a surgery or if you have had an injury or infection.

Your doctor may ask you to follow some restrictions related to beverages, activities or food intake. You should talk to your doctor about them and follow the advice of your doctor.

Breast feeding mothers should not be given this injection, as the medicine may pass into their breast milk and may cause harm to the nursing infant. If taking the medicine is inevitable, your doctor may advise you to stop breast-feeding the child for a few days after receiving the injection.

Local area reaction may commonly occur, including redness, pain or swelling at the site where injection was given. Notify your doctor at once, if any of these symptoms worsen or persist.

The patients may often encounter headache, nausea or dizziness after receiving Magnevist injection. However, some other serious side effects of the drug include weight gain, swelling, shortness of breath, increased thirst, loss of appetite, confusion, suicidal thoughts, depression, severe mood changes, drowsiness or stopped or reduced urination. Seek medical attention immediately if you develop any of these symptoms, or if any of the mild side effects of the drug become intolerable.

Some patients may also develop hypersensitivity to the medicine. Symptoms of an allergy include hives on body, facial swelling, trouble breathing or severe dizziness. Seek medical attention immediately if you develop any of these symptoms.

Dosage of Magnevist

You will receive Magnevist 0.2ml per kg of your body weight intravenously via an IV. The rate of releasing of the medicine is usually less than 10ml per 15 seconds.

Drug Interactions of Magnevist

As the drug causes dizziness, do not buy Magnevist with any other medicine that causes the same effect. Such medicines include sleeping pills, narcotic pain relievers, muscle relaxants, antidepressants, anti-anxiety medicines, anti-seizure medicines, tranquilizers and sedatives.

Apart from these, inform your doctor about all the medicines you are taking at present, including prescription drugs, non-prescription medicines, generic or branded drugs, health supplements and herbal preparations.
