Maxalt is indicated for treatment of acute migraine in adults after the attack starts. Migraine is a neurological condition in which severe and unbearable headache, appearance of light flashes (aura), vomiting, or nausea occur. Migraine affects women more than men. Brand or generic Maxalt acts in three ways to relieve the symptoms of migraine. It narrows the blood vessels surrounding the brain, blocks the transmission of pain signals between the nerve-ends and disrupts production of serotonin, a substance that is generated in the nerve-ends. Rizatriptan benzoate, the active component of Brand or generic Maxalt, is not a prophylactic medicine and does not reduce the frequency of future attacks. Maxalt Dosage
Your doctor will prescribe 5 mg or 10 mg dose is whichever suitable to you. Follow the directions. Take brand or generic Maxalt as soon as you notice that an attack of migraine is likely. The medicine acts better if you take it on empty stomach but you may take the drug after food also. If the symptoms are about to recur, you may take a follow-up dose. However, ensure a gap of about two hours between each dose. Do not take more than 30 mg of the medicine in a period of 24 hours.
