Some women cannot conceive because of poor ovulation even though their ovaries are basically healthy. Menopur helps such women to become pregnant by its hormonal action. Brand or generic Menopur is an injection and supplies two hormones. The first one, called Follicle-stimulating hormone, promotes the generation of more eggs. The second one namely, luteinizing hormone, helps proper ovulation, that is, it makes the eggs to grow, mature and release.
During this assisted reproductive treatment (ART), Menopur is usually combined with another hormone, known as, human chorionic gonadotropin hormone. The drug is a highly purified extract of urine taken from women who are past the menopause. It is not recommended if the ovaries are not making eggs properly, a condition called primary ovarian failure. Because of its purity, Menopur does not cause excessive pain at the injection site.
Precaution/ Side Effects for Menopur
Conduct pregnancy tests periodically before and during treatment using brand or generic Menopur/ Menotropins for injection USP. The drug should not be taken after conception. Make certain that facilities to manage Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS), fluid and electrolyte imbalances that may occur during this treatment are available with your consultant. Untrasonography and estradiol levels check are advised to monitor he growth and development of follicles. These two tests can minimize the OHSS risk.
Rise in body temperature, increase of progesterone in serum and menstruation following the body temperature change indicate ovulation. These three parameters are to be checked to determine the appropriate timing of the treatment to ensure both success as well as minimize the side effects. One of side effects that may arise during treatment with brand or generic Menopur (Menotropins for injection, USP) is multiple pregnancy. This may risk both the mother and the fetus. OHSS is a serious adverse effect observed in about 2 % of the people treated. Minor side effects that you may experience while taking brand or generic Menopur injection are nausea, vomiting, bloating of the abdomen, cramps or pain in the abdomen, and headache.
Menopur Dosage
Your doctor will advise on the appropriate dosage for brand or generic Menopur based on the various tests and your individual body conditions. The maximum dose in a day should be within 450 IU and the treatment cycle should not exceed 20 days. The dosage may be adjusted not more than once in two days and should not be varied by more than 150 IU on each occasion. Follow the prescribed dose faithfully and carefully.
Brand or generic Menopur is supplied in vials along with a special syringe. Dissolve the contents to make up the recommended dosage from one to six vials in the sterile saline and immediately inject subcutaneously while holding the syringe at a 900 angle to the skin. Take the injection on alternate sides of the lower abdomen and at different sites to avoid discomfort. Clean the point with rubbing alcohol. Throw away unused solution.
