General Information on Metanx
Metanx is prescribed as a dietary supplement for people suffering from specific blood vessel problems related to diabetic peripheral neuropathy. It is also prescribed for the treatment of hyperhomocysteinemia especially for people who have open sores or wounds (leg or foot ulcers). The primary use of Metanx is to manage medical conditions that have specific nutritional requirements.
Metanx is a medical food which contains L-Methylfolate with Vitamins B6 and B12. It acts as a dietary supplement and provides the required nutrition to the body which is necessary in specific medical conditions such as diabetic peripheral neuropathy.
Side effects of Metanx
All medicines have side effects. Metanx may also cause mild to severe side effects in some people even though it is a dietary supplement. Drowsiness, itching/ numbness/ tingling/ pricking sensation on the skin, nausea, diarrhea, feeling of swelling of the body and headaches are some common side effects associated with this dietary supplement.
Metanx may also cause serious side effects such as persistent tingling or numbness. Increase in the RBCs count is also one of the severe side effects associated with Metanx which is indicated by following symptoms
- Itchiness after a bath or warm shower
- Breathing problems when lying down
- Redness of the skin
- A feeling of fullness
- Fatigue
Some people may also experience severe allergic reactions after take a dose of Metanx. Hives, wheezing, an unexplained rash, difficulty swallowing or breathing, unexplained swelling of the lips, mouth or throat or itching are some of the allergic reactions associated with the use of Metanx. Metanx is not a medicine but a medical food, so it is not classified under any medicine pregnancy category. This dietary supplement contains higher than normal dose of Vitamin B12 (equivalent to two 1mg Vitamin B12 tablets). Heavy doses of Vitamin B12 may cause seizure in new born, so pregnant women are advised to buy Metanx only after consulting their doctor.
Dosage of Metanx
The dosage of Metanx depends on several factors which includes other medical conditions you are having, other medicines you using and how your body responds to Metanx. Your doctor will give you specific instructions regarding the dosage.
The recommend dose is one tablet two times a day. If you prefer to take only one dosage daily then you may take 2 Metanx tablets once daily. You doctor may reduce the dose to one tablet a day after improvement in symptoms.
Interactions
Metanx may interact with other medicines you are taking and cause side effects. It may interact with Aminosalicylic acid, cholesterol medications, antibiotic medications, specific anti-seizure medications, Capecitabine, Valproate medications, Metformin, Colchicine, or Pyrimethamine. This is not a complete list of medications that may interact with Metanx.
