General Information on Mevacor
Mevacor is used to treat hypercholesterolemia (high cholesterol) and to prevent heart disease. It is also recommended to slow down progression of atherosclerosis (hardening and narrowing of the arteries) in people with heart disease. The medication is specifically recommended when diet and exercise alone do not work to lower cholesterol levels
Lovastatin, the main active ingredient in the medication belongs to a class of drugs known as statins (HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors). The body breaks down Lovastatin into an acid which suppresses an enzyme that is used by cells to make cholesterol. This action intervenes in body’s natural process of making cholesterol which leads to reduced levels of cholesterol.
A reduction in the production of cholesterol prevents its build up on artery walls which slows down progression of atherosclerosis and prevents narrowing of blood vessels which helps prevent heart disease.
Mevacor is available in the form of a tablet. It is supplied in two strengths, 20mg and 40mg. The drug is a prescription medication which means you should not buy Mevacor without consulting your doctor.
