Miacalcin NS is used to treat osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. It is used in combination with vitamin D and calcium to treat bone loss. The drug is specifically recommended to women who have been experiencing menopause for more than 5 years.
Calcitonin, the main active ingredient in the drug belongs to a class of medications known as endocrine-metabolic agent. The drug works by inhibiting the process of osteoclasts (removal of old bone cells) and helping the process of osteoblasts (new bone formation).

Side effects of Miacalcin NS
Miacalcin NS may cause mild to severe side effects in some people. Less serious side effects caused by the medication can be categorized into common side effects and less common and rare side effects. Less serious side effects associated with Miacalcin NS: joint pain or back pain.
Less common and rare side effects: mental depression, upset stomach, stomach pain, constipation, muscle pain, flushing, diarrhea, dry/burning/itching eyes, unusual weakness/tiredness, flu-like symptoms. The less serious side effects generally wane with time as your body gets used to the medication. However, if they persist or become bothersome consult your doctor immediately.
Miacalcin NS may cause also cause severe side effects in some people. The severe side effects can be categorized into more common, less common and rare side effects. More common severe side effects: runny nose, sneezing, severe or continuing headaches, itching/dryness/tenderness/swelling or other signs of nasal irritation that did not exist before use of Miacalcin NS, patches/crusting/sores inside the nose, nosebleeds, stuffy nose.
Less common severe side effects: difficulty with breathing, cloudy or bloody urine, difficulty, pain or burning sensation while passing urine, severe wheezing, loss of sense of smell, dizziness, swollen glands, frequent urge to urinate, fever, hoarseness or other voice changes, head congestion, runny nose, sore throat, upper respiratory infection associated with chest pain, cough or chills.
Rare severe side effects: hives, taste disturbances, hair loss, skin rash, itching, increased thirst. Stop using the medication and consult your doctor immediately if you notice or experience any severe side effects after using the medication.
Miacalcin NS may also cause severe allergic reaction such as anaphylaxis which is life threatening and requires immediate medical attention. Your doctor will perform a skin allergy test before prescribing this medication.
Dosage of Miacalcin NS
Your doctor will give specific instructions regarding the dosage. The dosage of Miacalcin NS differs with every patient. The recommended dosage to treat osteoporosis in postmenopausal women is one spray into one nostril daily. Apply the medication in the right nostril on one day and the left nostril on the next day.
Interactions
