General Information on Milbemax

Milbemax is a drug commonly used for preventing heartworms and controlling other parasitic infections generally seen in cats and dogs. You can buy Milbemax online only after getting a prescription for the same from a vet. The drug is not available in general drugstores. The generic name of Milbemax is milbemycin oxime and praziquantel.

Side effects of the drug

A lot of research has been conducted regarding the use and effects of Milbemax. Generally, it has been seen that both cats and dogs are quite tolerant toward the drug. Sometimes, even an overdose does not seem to do any damage to the animal. However, an extremely high dose can result in the pet experiencing mild tremors.

Before you buy Milbemax, you should be aware of how heartworms can affect your pet’s health. Heartworms can exist in the subject long before they are even detected. The disease originates from a parasitic roundworm known as Dirofilaria Immitis, which resides in the right side of the heart. These worms damage the blood vessels in the lungs and hamper the natural flow of blood, thereby increasing the chances of a heart attack. Heartworms can also spread to other parts of the body like the brain and wreak havoc to a pet’s health.

The disease is mainly spread by mosquitoes feeding on infected cats or dogs.

Dosage

Milbemax is available in different strengths for cats and dogs. For cats, Milbemax is available in the form of Milbemax Kitten and Milbemax Cat. The former contains 4mg milbemycin oxime and 10mg praziquantel per tablet, and the latter contains 16mg milbemycin oxime and 40mg praziquantel per tablet. Milbemax for small dogs and puppies contains 2.5mg milbemycin oxime and 25mg praziquantel per tablet. Moreover, Milbemax for dogs contains 12.5mg milbemycin oxime and 125mg praziquantel per tablet.

Milbemax should be administered at the same time every month for best results. The prevention of heartworms depends on the indication of mosquito activity. Milbemax should be administered at the first indication, and the dosage should be continued even after the end of the mosquito season. Administration of tablets should not be done at a gap of more than 30 days from the previous dose. This often leads to Milbemax not working to its full potential. The advice of a veterinarian should be sought if there is a gap of more than 2 months between doses.

The method of administration of Milbemax is quite simple. The tablet should either be placed in the cat’s/dog’s mouth or given along with food in case they refuse to swallow it. After administration of the tablets, it is essential to supervise the cat/dog to determine whether the full dose has been swallowed. If Milbemax is not swallowed, you may have to give your pet another dose yet again.

Interactions

Milbemax tablets should not be administered if the cat/dog reacts negatively to any of the substances present in it. You must also not buy Milbemax and give it to cats and dogs below the age of 1 week.
