Myleran is a medication used in the palliative treatment of chronic myelogenous leukemia. It is an alkalyting agent, i.e. causes damage to cancer cells by inducing an error in their DNA structure. During the initial course of treatment, the count may actually increase and this should not be seen as resistance to the drug. The dose should not be increased during the first ten days. When a decline is noticed, the drug should be stopped before normal levels are reached. The decrease in counts can usually be observed in 12 to 30 weeks after initiation of medication. During remission, the patient’s leukocyte count has to be monitored closely.
