Basic Information on Naprelan
Naprelan is used in the treatment of psoriatic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, tendinitis, bursitis, ankylosing spondylitis, dental pain, menstrual cramps etc. It is used for reducing the inflammation, stiffness, fever and pain that is caused due to the above mentioned conditions. The brand or generic Naprelan is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).
The drug with a formulation of sodium-salt regulates a rapid absorption in the body. It has both antipyretic and analgesic properties. The drug acts by inhibiting COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes in the body that are responsible for the synthesis of prostaglandins. This anti-inflammatory effect of the drug helps in reducing the swelling and pain. Earlier it was a prescription drug only but in 1994 it was approved by the US FDA as an over the counter drug.
Precautions / Side Effects for Naprelan
General side effects of Naprelan are gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding and GI ulcers, as the GI tract is usually affected by the drug. Other common side effects of the drug are drowsiness, blurred vision and confusion. Before beginning the therapy with Naproxen let your health care provider or your physician know if you have had any pre-existing conditions associated with administration of NSAIDs such as nasal polyps, hypotension, asthma and utricaria.
While administering Naproxen, do not consume alcohol as it may increase the risk of GI bleeding. Avoid taking the drug before activities that need you to be alert such as driving, as the drug tends to cause drowsiness. The drug should be administered along with food and a glass of water. The drug must be administered with caution if you are taking lithium supplements as well. Avoid the administration of brand or generic Naprelan along with salicylate agents (like Aspirin) because the two interact and reduce the other drug’s effects.
