Basic Information On Nivemycin

Nivemycin is a broad spectrum antibiotic which is used to suppress normal flora bacteria in the bowel, thus decreasing the risk of infection during bowel surgery. In this process, called preoperative preparation of the bowel, this medication is given concomitantly with erythromycin enteric-coated base. The Nivemycin drug is also used in the treatment of hepatic coma where it reduces bacteria which form ammonia in the intestinal tract. It obstructs the bacterial protein formation by binding to 30S ribosomal subunit and the genetic code is misread. Incorrect peptide sequence is then formed in protein chain, which results in death of ammonia causing bacteria. This leads to decrease in blood ammonia which results in neurological improvement. The drug Nivemycin is used topically to treat or prevent skin infections caused by bacteria. It, however, does not treat fungal or viral infections.

Precautions/ Side Effects Of Nivemycin

Nivemycin contains Neomycin sulfate which can cause hearing loss, intestinal obstruction, bowel disease or kidney disease. Do inform your doctor if you have any of these problems in which case you may not be able to take brand or generic Nivemycin or require dosage adjustment. You may also need particular medical monitoring through blood tests during treatment. Other side effects include skin tingling, feeling of fullness in ears, numbness, muscle twitching and dizziness which may indicate nerve or kidney damage.

Neomycin sulfate belongs to FDA pregnancy category D which means it harms an unborn baby. You should therefore not take brand or generic Nivemycin if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. Breast feeding mothers should not take this medication as it passes into breast milk. You should inform your doctor before starting this medication if you are pregnant or are planning to get pregnant.

Nivemycin Dosage

Nivemycin is not recommended for long span of time. Lowest possible dose taken for shortest treatment period minimizes the risk of toxicity. The recommended daily dose for treatment of hepatic coma is 4 gm to 12 gm. Supportive therapy like blood products should be given and toxic levels should be monitored periodically. Diuretic agents should be avoided while protein should be withdrawn from the diet. Divided doses 4-12 gms of neomycin sulfate should be given per day. Protein should be gradually returned to diet during the treatment period of five to six days.
