Basic Information On Neupro

Neupro is a drug used in the treatment of Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) and Parkinson’s disease (PD). It is a non-ergolinic agonist of dopamine. The drug also has anti-depressant properties. Thus it is also used in the treatment of depression. It is believed that the drug acts by stimulating the dopamine D2-rectptors in the brain (caudate putamen). It is considered to be a partial agonist or full agonist of D2-receptor. However, the precise mechanism of action is not known. The drug is available in form of transdermal patches. It is administered topically. The brand or generic Neupro patches should be used as directed by the physician.

Precautions / Side Effects For Neupro

You may experience common side effects with Neupro which may include runny nose, weight gain, more urination than usual, swelling/ itching/ reddening on the skin where the patch is applied, feeling dizzy, tiredness, weakness, loss of appetite, diarrhea, sleepiness, mild drowsiness, headache, blurred vision, swelling in hands or feet and sleep disorders (such as insomnia). Let your physician know if these side effects worsen or prolong. You may also experience certain allergic reactions with Rotigotine such as difficulty in breathing, hives and swelling in the lips, face, throat or tongue.

Neupro Dosage

The starting dose of Neupro is recommended to be 2 mg/24 hours. The dose may be adjusted based on the patient’s tolerability and response. If required the dose may be increased by another 2 mg/week. The increments must be done with the gap of a week’s time. The effective dose of the drug is considered to be 4 mg/24 hours. The maximum dose recommended is 6 mg/24 hours and should not be exceeded as higher doses do not show any further therapeutic benefits. The transdermal Neupro drug is applied once in a day. It is applied on clean and dry skin, either on the upper arms, thigh, flank, hip or shoulder.
