Basic Information on Nevanac

Nevanac 0.10% is an ophthalmic solution which is available as prescription drug. The drug is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent (NSAID). It is used in the treatment of inflammation and pain which is associated with the cataract surgery. It is also indicated in the management of chronic pain in the eye.

While administering the brand or generic Nevanac the tip of the container used to dispense the drug should not touch the eye or its surroundings, in order to avoid any ocular infection. The drug acts by penetrating into the cornea and gets converted to Amfenac by the ocular tissue hydrolases. Amfenac is a NSAID and it inhibits the effects of prostaglandin H synthase which is responsible for the synthesis of prostaglandin.

Precautions / Side Effects for Nevanac

The common side effects with Nevanac are decreased visual acuity, increased intra-ocular pressure (IOP), feeling or sensation of some foreign body in the eye and sticky sensation. These are the side effects that you may experience due to the administration of the drug, post the cataract surgery. Other rare side effects of Nepafenac include headache, sinusitis, hypertension, nausea, and vomiting. Ocular side effects of the drug that are rare include corneal edema, conjunctival edema, eye-lids’ margin crusting, dryness in the eyes, ocular discomfort or pain, ocular hyperemia, photophobia, ocular pruritus, and tearing.

The use of topical NSAIDs like Nepafenac is known to delay or slow down the healing process. It may also lead to keratitis. In some patients if the drug is used continuously then it may also lead to thinning of the cornea, epithelial breakdown, perforation of the cornea or ulceration in the cornea. Therefore, if you see any signs of the corneal breakdown then discontinue the brand or generic Nevanac and consult your ophthalmologist for further use of topically administered NSAIDs.

Nevanac Dosage

The sterile ophthalmic solution of Nevanac is applied topically to affected eye (or both eyes) in the form of drops. The recommended dose is only one drop of the drug to be applied 3 times a day. The dosage begins before the cataract surgery. The drops are administered one day prior to the surgery, 3 times a day. It is then continued on the 2nd day, the day the cataract surgery is scheduled. Thereafter, the drops are administered for 2 weeks in the post-operative period.

The Nevanac drug may be administered along with any other ophthalmic solution or medication which includes carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, mydriatics, cycloplegics, alpha agonists, and beta blockers.
