General Information on Nizoral Cream

Nizoral Cream is used to treat fungal infections of the skin. Its generic name is ketoconazole, which is an anti-fungal antibiotic drug. Do not buy NizoralCream if you are allergic to ketoconazole.

Ketoconazole interferes with the cell membranes of fungi and yeasts, consequently killing them. It stops the fungi from producing a certain chemical that is very important for keep their cell membranes intact. By disrupting the production of this chemical, the cell membranes in fungi begin to rupture resulting in the contents of the cell to flow out, thus killing the fungi.

Nizoral Cream may be used to treat a number of different types of yeast infections, apart from fungal infections. These include athlete’s foot, ringworm, jock itch and thrush infections on the vagina and skin.

Side effects of Nizoral Cream

All medicines affect different people in different ways and may cause certain side effects. Nizoral Cream is also known to cause side effects, but it does not mean that all those using this cream will face them. The most common side effects are mild itching, irritation or a stinging sensation in the area where the cream was applied. However, you must seek medical help at once in case any of the following side effects occur:

  • Severe allergic reactions
  • reddening, blistering, peeling
  • itching or burning of your skin

Before you buy Nizoral Cream, you must consult your doctor if you are pregnant or breast feeding, or if you consume more than 3 drinks of alcohol a day.

Dosage of Nizoral Cream

Nizoral Cream should be used twice a day to cover the infected area. On average, all the fungal and yeast infections take 2 weeks to be cured. Use Nizoral Cream only for the time span recommended by the physician. You may feel better before the prescribed period of medication ends, but you must continue applying Nizoral Cream nevertheless. This is because the infection might occur again if the treatment is not complete, and the fungus may also show resistance to the effects of this cream, making it more difficult to treat the infection.

Clean the infected area with soap and water before applying Nizoral Cream. Apply enough medicine to cover the area and rub gently. Do not cover unless advised by the physician. Wash your hands after applying the medicine.

If you miss one dose, use the medicine as soon as possible. If it is almost time for the next dose then you continue your normal schedule without worrying about the missed dose. Do not take 2 doses at a time to make up for a missed dose.

Interactions

Several drugs are known to interact with Nizoral Cream, especially other topical medications. You must inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking before you are prescribed this medicine.

Patients using Nizoral Cream should minimize their consumption of alcohol. Concurrent use of ketoconazole with ethanol may result in reactions such as sweating, flushing, nausea, headache etc.
