General Information on Nordette

Nordette is an oral contraceptive used for preventing pregnancy. Its other uses include regulating menstrual cycles and treating acne. Nordette is a combination of ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel. Ethinyl estradiol and Levonorgestrel are female hormones. While the former is a form of estrogen, the latter is a form of progestin.

Nordette interrupts the pregnancy process in three ways. First, it stops ovaries from releasing eggs. Secondly, it also changes the cervical mucus which does not allow the sperm to enter the womb. Lastly, it changes the lining of the womb, which does not allow the egg to attach itself to the wall of the uterus.

There are a few benefits of using Nordette as a birth control pill. It keeps a check on the loss of iron during periods, which reduces the chances of anemia. It also prevents menstrual symptoms such as pain, and protects against certain cancers of the ovary and uterus. It also allows women to time when the period occurs.

Side effects of Nodette

Some common side effects found in almost all birth control pills are also found in Nordette. These side effects include short-lived vaginal bleeding, fluid retention and dark spots on skin, particularly on face. Women who are already pregnant or breastfeeding should not buy Nordette. Some other side effects, which might not be so common, are given below:

  • Mild side effects, such as swelling on body parts, headache, body pain, nausea etc.
  • Vaginal infections, itching and discharge
  • Considerable increase or decrease in appetite
  • Symptoms of depression
  • Loss of hair
  • Allergic reactions such as hives, difficulty breathing, swelling in face, lips, tongue, or throat
  • Breast tenderness or swelling accompanied by pain
  • Problems with vision, speech, or balance

Any minor or major side effects, when observed, must be reported to the doctor immediately. However, do not stop taking medicine without consulting your doctor.

Dosage of Nordette

The consumption must be in complete accordance with the directions of the Doctor. Nordette is available in a pack of 28 tablets, each containing 0.03 mg of ethinyl estradiol and 0.15 mg of levonorgestrel. However, there are no active ingredients in the last seven tablets. One of the essential things to remember is that the pill has to be consumed at the same time every day. There should be a gap of exactly 24 hours between consumption of two pills. Missing even a single dose increases the risk of being pregnant. The pill must be consumed only for that period of time as recommended by the doctor.

Interactions

Before you decide to buy Nordette, you must inform your doctor or the pharmacist about all the medications you are currently consuming. A total of 452 drugs are known to interact with Nordette, of which 13 lead to major interactions, while 294 are moderate and 145 are minor interactions. Some of the 13 major interactions include Hemin, Griseofulvin, Etretinate, Dantrolene, Acetretin, etc. Even HIV/AIDS medication, antibiotics and seizure medications interact with Nordette. Moreover, you must also inform your doctor about any vitamins, minerals and herbal products that you are using.
